Change your Lifestyle, Change Your Life

With lifestyle diseases like cancer, heart disease, type II diabetes on the rise, there has never been a better time to think about and choose to create a healthier lifestyle for yourself and your family.  It seems that every commercial on TV, every ad in magazines and news papers, and the radio see is about medicine.  There are different color pills for every condition, whether real, or being made up by the medical community to find more ways to give you pills, and you are told by the commercial to tell your doctor that you need the medication.

The MD's job has become a lot easier.  Their patients come in and say I want the red pill for this body part, and the blue one for this body part, and I need it because I saw an add on TV that said if I feel a certain way I should take these pills.  Or has their job become more difficult... patients demanding medications because they are be bombarded at every angle by the pharmaceutical companies.  Pharmaceutical companies are spending BILLIONS of dollars a year to tell the public that there bodies are dumb and can not function without drugs in them.

Choosing a healthier lifestyle will change your life.  Lifestyle care is really about keeping your spine and nervous system aligned, balanced, and functioning for a lifetime.  Nervous system function determines how well your body adapts internally and externally to your environment.  Breathing, heart beat, digestion, immune system, and EVERYTHING ELSE are controlled by your nervous system.

What else goes into living an ideal lifestyle?

You are what you eat.  Eating healthy foods, organic, raw, non processed foods give you body the right nutrients and fuel a healthier lifestyle.  Eating grass fed organic meats to get your healthy fats your body needs, or wild caught fish (never farmed fish).  Eat organic vegetables and fruits, and do your best to eat fresh verses canned foods.  An alternative to fresh fruit and vegetables are organic fresh frozen fruits and veggies (great in smoothies).    We recommend decreasing your your dairy intake, and increase your water intake (how ever many pounds you weigh, drink that many ounces).

Your body was designed to MOVE.  A sedentary lifestyle, or a life behind the desk is not great for a healthy lifestyle.  Endurance exercises like walking, running, an elliptical machine, playing basket ball, soccer, tennis all improve your body's endurance muscles including your heart.

Strengthening exercises help your body work against gravity that will never go away.  Strengthening muscles in the body will help you become less dependent on others as you age.  You will be able to stand up, sit down, get up from the floor, and walk up flights of stairs with ease if you take care of your strength for a lifetime and don't wait until a crisis occurs.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste (you can actually change your mind to change your life).  Science in the past has shown that we are doomed by our genes.  That is no longer 100% accurate.   your brain is plastic (meaning it can change) and you can actively change it.  It's not easy work... if it was, we'd be a lot healthier all the time.  Just think about if you hear a car back fire or someone startles you.  When that happens, you change your physiology (the way your body works) = increased heart rate, your breathing changes, your adrenal glands send out adrenaline... this means you go into an internal fight of flight physiology. Your body goes into a stress response...

So to get your lifestyle in order, the best thing to do is take your first step.  A chiropractor is a doctor that works with the essence of the body.  We work the the body's spine and nervous system and the body's innate ability to heal in regenerate itself.  We are the gatekeepers of lifestyle based care.  We have the knowledge and resources to help you participate in all areas of your lifestyle.

  3. Healthy habits can protect you from the harmful effects of stress. Here are 10 positive healthy habits you may want to develop.

    Talk with family and friends.
A daily dose of friendship is great medicine. Call or write your friends and family to share your feelings, hopes and joys.
    Engage in daily physical activity.
Regular physical activity relieves mental and physical tension. Physically active adults have lower risk of depression and loss of mental functioning. Physical activity can be a great source of pleasure, too. Try walking, swimming, biking or dancing every day.
Accept the things you cannot change.
Don't say, "I'm too old." You can still learn new things, work toward a goal, love and help others.
    Remember to laugh.
Laughter makes you feel good. Don't be afraid to laugh out loud at a joke, a funny movie or a comic strip, even when you're alone.
    Give up the bad habits.
Too much alcohol, cigarettes or caffeine can increase stress. If you smoke, decide to quit now.
    Slow down.
Try to "pace" instead of "race." Plan ahead and allow enough time to get the most important things done.
    Get enough sleep.
Try to get six to eight hours of sleep each night. If you can't sleep, take steps to help reduce stress and depression. Physical activity also may improve the quality of sleep.
    Get organized.
Use "to do" lists to help you focus on your most important tasks. Approach big tasks one step at a time. For example, start by organizing just one part of your life — your car, desk, kitchen, closet, cupboard or drawer.
    Practice giving back.
Volunteer your time or return a favor to a friend. Helping others helps you.
    Try not to worry.
The world won't end if your grass isn't mowed or your kitchen isn't cleaned. You may need to do these things, but today might not be the right time.
